Hi Jen!
Fortunately, racism was probably not the issue here. The two police officers were white, as were the two women and two men with me. I was the only non-white person there. They were more likely to hold our age against us than anything else. Berkeley police officers tend to be ok; they get their share of "noise violation" complaints, but they have bigger fish to fry (not that they necessarily do), namely, skirt perverts and muggings. Glad you liked the postcard :)

Mik-Yes.

Marc-You seem to be spam, but hey, at least I have some semblance of readership.

I did in fact read Catcher. For the record.

Generally, I don't talk about China. And I don't think I would refer to it as "the motherland" because we all know that my mother is as Chinese as fortune cookies. I do call Italy "the patria" - mostly because fatherland has Nazi overtones. Patria is (for me) an Italian word, but it comes from Latin. Originally, it was part of the phrase "patria terra" - father (adjective) land. And that's how fatherland ended up being a feminine word.

I have heard Italians say matria (i.e. Motherland, presumably), however that's a neologism as far as I know. The traditional Italian phrase for motherland is Madre Patria.

Don't you feel well informed now? ;)

And I will be attempting to give you a phone call after work! Tata!

I hate to ask this, but do you think racism was involved? Welcome to the Midwest. Ugh. I guess Berkeley cops were better behaved than Columbus and some Ann Arbor officers can be. I think sometimes when officers are in small college towns, they assume specific behavior from students - graduate or not, and then they just take it out on everyone. Those folks were absolutely unprofessional and obnoxious - I'm sorry you went through that.

It's great to see you back! Thanks so much for the lovely postcard, and Taiwan did, in fact, look extremely lush. I loved seeing your photos.

Cindy, you know, I wouldn't worry too much about the prayer thing and feeling like it's not your place to wish things for people. In Christianity, it's more like, prayer for whatever, God understands that you're not saying "hey, I know what these people need so do this." Plus, prayers aren't demands, they're requests. We can't bribe or demand God do anything but we can request that he do something. Maybe you could try asking for your family's general well-being, health prosperity, support in whatever they're doing or anything really. It doesn't have to be specific if you don't want it to be.

I guess with me, when I talk to God, it's more like, "I don't know what is best for them, but You do. Please help and guide this person." I don't think you have to focus on making sure all your prayers are directed toward one cause - if God is really God, then praying for multiple people/needs/things shouldn't be a problem. I think God is the ultimate multi-tasker. There are many people intercessing on behalf of the poor and down trodden, it's ok if you pray for your family too.

I can't wait to see you when you get back home! Don't give your FB name to any service men that you might run into >_>
